The restaurant in the hotel was relatively busy, patrons from both the hotel, and outside, enjoying the cuisine. Gerald had booked a table after confirming a time with Julianna, and was, as usual, early. He had ordered a gin and tonic, and was just finishing it when the sommelier, or at least what Americans thought passed as one, appeared with the bottle of wine Gerald had ordered.

"Yes, that's the one," he confirmed when shown the label, nodding when asked if he would like it opened. "Yes, it needs to breath," he told the young man, figuring that if nothing else, at least the chap would have a better understanding of the role he was employed to fulfill. "And another gin and tonic, if you would be so kind," he told him, pleased he hadn't had to tell the chap that the bottle should be opened in front of him and left to breath on the table. At some ghastly restaurant in New York they'd tried to take the bottle away, and tried to act offended when he clearly pointed out that he wasn't about to give them the opportunity to decant the wine in the bottle and replace it with a cheaper variety.

He nodded his approval of the linen napkin that was correctly draped around the neck of the bottle, as he had instructed, and settled back in his chair, returning to observing the tide of humanity that was dining in the Golden Nugget that evening.

Julianna was late, but only because a traffic light had been out of order, so a policeman had been directing traffic to prevent incidents between motorists. The Watcher arrived in the Golden Nugget's restaurant, shaking off the early evening chill as the host greeted her.

She spotted Gerald already at the table, and approached as he continued to people-watch. She'd been surprised to hear from him, and it made her wonder if he was on another of his treasure hunts. God alone knew what the desert could be hiding. But was it a sanctioned trip by the Council, and if so, why hadn't she been informed?

"I apologize for the delay in getting back to you," she said with a smile as she took up space in the chair opposite him. "The university is finally replacing that dreadful girl, so I should be dealing with someone competent once the holiday break is over."

"I'll have a gimlet. Vodka, not gin."

Julianna studied the label on the wine bottle with interest, then glanced around at her surroundings. She'd stayed in a different establishment when she first arrived in Las Vegas, so she wasn't familiar with what they served here. Still, if they could cook a decent steak, she'd be happy with dinner.

"How have you been, Gerald?" she asked once the server had departed. "It seems like it's been ages since we've spoken. Is this official business or something else?"

The news that Gerald's presence had nothing to do with checking up on her made Julianna relax. It might have been foolish of her, but despite her lingering doubts she wanted to be considered good at her job. No, not her job, her calling. To have others second-guessing her when she was already second-guessing herself would have been too much.

"There has been some activity within the city," she told the other Watcher. If she mentioned Elfleda, would he be aware of who the Corruptress was? "Vampires, of course, but other entities as well. It seems as if there's a place in Las Vegas where demons and such can go for sport. Hand-to-hand combat, you know. Rather like boxing, but likely with fewer rules. I've not been, but blood sports have never interested me, no matter who's competing."

They'd prepared her drink with the exact amount of lime juice she preferred, and she sipped at it appreciatively as the waiter was being summoned. When she was sure he was out of earshot, she dropped her voice to a murmur.

"Have you heard of Leviathan?"

Starting there seemed like a good idea. To discuss the matter with a colleague might give her new understanding, a better way to deal with the situation. She'd set the wards at her apartment, then done the best she could to cleanse her office of the brunette's presence. If Gerald could help, it was better to share information.

Julianna concentrated on the glass in her hand so she wouldn't spill her drink, and a slight chill wandered up her spine. Then again, it was expected that Gerald would know what she was alluding to. She pushed the hint of coldness aside by thinking warm thoughts.

"Yes, her name is Elfleda," the Watcher said with a slight nod. "I don't know if there are others like her. There might be. There isn't much in the lore about her specifically. But I've encountered her. Or she's visited me. I'm not sure how to explain it."

The black-jacketed waiter arrived with menus, and Julianna sat back in her chair and took another pull from her drink. Talking about this could only make it better, not worse.

"No, I haven't. The circumstances surrounding it are a bit unusual, and I wouldn't know where to begin."

Would he report her if he knew she was attempting to foster a mentoring relationship with Valerie? Could he report her? Yes, they were friends, and that friendship had deepened over the years. When Elisabeth passed away, she'd extended her condolences. Years before that, when she didn't accept Edmund's marriage proposal, Gerald had been the one she'd explained her reasons to. They'd known each other for a long time, and she trusted him. How much of a stickler for protocol was he?

"I'm trying to get back into the swing of things," she told the other Watcher slowly. Her drink had been freshened, and she looked down into the glass contemplatively. "Professionally, you understand. I seem to have found a bit of light at the end of a very long tunnel, and I've started to work my way towards it. I'm not sure how the Council would react to the situation."

"Valerie. It turns out she was Allison's replacement, called at the moment of her death."

Julianna said it quietly, a thread of pain in her voice. One day, she'd be able to remember without the memory hurting. One day. That was what she was working towards. She put her drink down, folded her ringless hands together on the tabletop.

"It's still tentative, on both sides. She absorbed the things she was taught in London, and practices them stringently. She's a very good soldier. But I'd like to think I can still make a difference somehow. That was how I attracted the attention of...well...her."

It was probably very good advice, but Julianna couldn't bring herself to heed it. If she didn't take a risk, nothing would change. The worst thing a person could ever have was regrets. As much as losing Allison had hurt, she didn't - couldn't - regret befriending her. Possibly that was part of the reason she hadn't put it behind her after all this time.

"I appreciate your concern, Gerald," she said with a warm smile. "And I'm not planning to be foolish about this. Someone told me that it's not my place to make decisions for other people, and I'm trying to take that to heart."

The food arrived, brought to the table on a wheeled cart, and the Watcher unwrapped her cutlery and put the cloth napkin in her lap. She'd ordered the fettucine alfredo with shrimp, but only because they couldn't serve a rare enough steak for her liking. But pasta was a fine substitute.

"So." The waiter had departed, leaving them to their dinners. "Enough about me. I'd like to hear about you. How are things on your end?"

She listened with interest while Gerald described his encounter at Ragnarok, made a note that she should possibly visit the place herself. The Seventh Circle didn't appeal to her, but a less combat-oriented establishment might. It didn't escape her attention that the other Watcher didn't mention anything about his personal life, but he'd always been reserved on the subject. She didn't even know if he'd tried to start seeing someone in the wake of Elisabeth's death.

"You'll find the area a bit lacking in culture at first, at least compared to London," Julianna said as she twirled some noodles onto her fork. "But there are programs hosted by the university, and there's Cottonwood Cove, which is only a few miles away. I was on one of their day cruises not that long ago."

"It's a resort and marina on Lake Mohave," Julianna answered. "A woman in my department organized an outing, but because it was the off-season for tourists the place was rather deserted. It is quaint, though. A good place for privacy if you want to get out of the city for a weekend."

The shrimp were a little tough, but there were plenty of them. The Watcher had cut herself off after two gimlets since she was driving, but the wine was very good for a relatively new vintage. "Will you be taking an apartment, or do you intend to keep residing here?"

"It's to the south, about an hour from Las Vegas," she answered. "I didn't expect to find somewhere for recreational swimming outside of a hotel pool in an arid place like this, but I intend to go back in the summer when the weather is more typical of the state."

It piqued her curiosity that Gerald might not remain in Nevada permanently, but in his line of work travel was imperative because the next treasure trove could be found anywhere. Was he looking for something in particular?

"Is there to be a dig in the vicinity?"

"Oh, yes, absolutely. The area does have a...a pull, despite the apparent desolate nature of it. The quiet may be pervasive, but it's also misleading. Still waters and all that."

Julianna was halfway through her dinner at this point and contemplating dessert. If Gerald was still getting to know the area, had this multi-armed acquaintance of his informed him about Searchlight? There had to be others who were in the know about the town, as tiny as it was. A place that small would have dried up and blown away like a tumbleweed if something wasn't going on, as far as she was concerned.

"I suppose you'll be investigating Searchlight at some point?" she asked the other Watcher. "I dig a small bit of digging when I first arrived, but other matters pulled me away from the subject."

"I was looking for someone."

Only her promise to Rhiannon about keeping quiet regarding her presence in Las Vegas prevented Julianna from relating the dreadful time she'd had trying to track the girl down, only to have her appear in her office seemingly out of nowhere. The relationship would always be acrimonious at best, which was why she was putting off a certain piece of business with the brunette Slayer. But she didn't want to talk about that now.

"It seems as if the mines were a large draw in the past," she added, toying with her wine glass. "There were several strikes of gold and silver, and as the population grew the place became a bit of a boomtown. In the current time, the mines have been closed, and as the money ran out, so did the people. But it seems to draw people there even in the modern age, almost as if the people who end up there have a purpose in being there."

"Psychic energy, perhaps," Julianna suggested. "A location doesn't have to be as grand as Stonehenge to be a nexus for unseen forces. I'd have to do more research to properly develop a theory, but I have the feeling that something must be going on there."

She polished off a few more bites of pasta, a thoughtful expression on her face. With two Watchers in the area, they'd be able to combine their respective resources and share ideas. Gerald wasn't just a friend, he was a respected colleague. If her plan to be good at this again was to succeed, she'd need professional support.

"It's good to see you again. Old soldiers like us need to stick together."

"Yes, people in these times do want everything too quickly," she agreed. "Forty years ago, there was no such thing as the bloody internet, and there wasn't a television in every home either. I see the laziness on campus, in my classroom and elsewhere. Intellectual sloth. I'm never sure if I should weep or be afraid. There are exceptions, of course, but that's why they're exceptions."

Not that Julianna wanted to turn back her own personal clock. She didn't want to be twenty again. She didn't even want to be forty again. With age came experience, and she didn't want to undo any of that. But every now and then, she did wish the world around her would stop changing so rapidly.

"The meal is quite good," she said with approval. Her plate was nearly empty. A couple two tables over was making selections from a dessert cart. "The restaurant at the hotel I stayed at when I first arrived served a fine dinner as well. I'm sure the people at headquarters didn't know what to make of my list of expenses, but when no one complained I presumed it wasn't an issue."

To be diplomatic or to say how she felt?

"At first, I felt as if I was living in exile," Julianna said. "I didn't want to come to the States initially, despite the chance for a very good teaching job. Assuming responsibility for the check-in meant facing what happened seven years ago. Really facing it. The Council may not have censured me, but I know they don't tolerate failure."

She paused, because the waiter had returned to ask if they'd like anything else. After a brief pause for thought, the Watcher ordered a third gimlet. All that food would offset the effects of the alcohol well enough. He went away again after asking Gerald if he wanted something too. She waited until he was out of earshot before speaking again.

"However, as time has passed and I've become accustomed to the area, I've realized that I can get assistance if I require it. I've made more than a few trans-Atlantic phone calls since I've been here, and if I don't get immediate results, someone from London gets in touch in a few days. So I'm not feeling as separated anymore."

"I've been here since August. It seems like longer than that. And you're the only other Watcher in the area, at least as far as I know. That was why I was so surprised to hear from you when it wasn't long distance."

Perhaps it was because she'd never married, but London had represented safety for Julianna in the wake of her Slayer's death. The chances for travel, including the dig in Peru, had been temporary escapes, but she'd always returned to her flat and teaching afterwards. She wondered if it was fate that had caused her to be here in the present time, trying to re-assume her responsibilities as a Watcher. If everything had a purpose to it, perhaps this had been unavoidable.

"If you do find something of particular interest, I'd like to hear about it," she told Gerald as she signaled the waiter with the dessert cart to come over. "My translating skills are a bit rusty, but I'm slowly blowing the cobwebs away."

Julianna smiled warmly at Gerald as she picked up her wine glass and lifted it in a toast. "To new discoveries and old friendships."

The cart supporting the sweets was in range. She was going to be stuffed before this meal was over, which meant paying strict attention to her exercise regimen for the next week or so. Even if nothing came of it, it would be nice to work with someone familiar again. One never knew what tomorrow might bring, after all.
