He had stopped drinking human blood for a girl who was MIA.
Of course Daniel figured that was his fault, too. Get too loose with your relationship rules and suddenly there weren’t any at all. If their involvement could be construed as a relationship… He was fuzzy on that. Nevertheless, Daniel had given it up for Holly, and now there was no Holly, but he was still trying to hold out because there might (?) be a Holly at some point in the future and at this point, he was proud of his restraint. Not killing people might be the only prowess Daniel could muster.
But things got touchy when the butcher ran out of blood.
So here Daniel was in a pet shop, holding a brown bunny by its midsection, pretending to be in earnest search of a furry companion. The bunny’s eyes darted back and forth. Its nose twitched. Daniel inspected its undercarriage because he didn’t know its gender. Why that mattered when the idea was to eat it, he didn’t know.
“Have you ever cared for a bunny before?” asked a saleswoman in enormous glasses.
“No,” he said. “I had a dog once.”
“They’re nothing… like dogs,” she condescended.
“Really? Because my dog humped everything in sight, too.” Daniel smiled at her, trying to charm her. It did not work, so he said, “I’ll check out a library book,” just to get her off his scent. He carried the bunny to the shop window and looked outside. Daylight savings time meant that he had to shack up longer, so it was 9:30 already. The shop closed at 10:00. If he was going to drain this critter tonight, he needed to make up his mind.
A pretentious woman in a fur stole walked past the shop. Daniel covered the bunny’s eyes. "Look awaaaaay," he cried.

on 2014-04-05 03:22 pm (UTC)"No. No, I meant float on the water. You know, if she floats she's a witch, if she sinks she's... uh... Salem? Witchcraft trials?" He wondered if he had the reference wrong. It had been a long time since American history. "Forget it, I'm sure you'll be levitating in no time." He looked at the bunny, the cage and its contents, and wondered how he was supposed to carry it all outside. As he consulted his wallet and considered getting a cab, he said, "You shouldn't cover your mouth when you laugh. Laughs are supposed to be loud and you look good doing it."

on 2014-04-06 02:45 am (UTC)Instead now a flush of colour rose in her cheeks, and Melody could feel it heat up her face. "Thank you," she found herself saying automatically again, though she did mean it and hoped he wouldn't notice the blush. It was from both his apparent faith that she would master the skills required, and his compliment that had her smiling and looking at Socrates again, to deflect attention.
The sales assistant chose that moment to return from the storeroom and had a triumphant look on her face as she presented the missing items. She gave Daniel a look over and Melody noticed the slight angle of her head and batting of her eyelashes at him, the attention she'd been giving Melody before now halved. Melody looked down at her hands to hide the smile on her face, especially at the sales assistant's question to Daniel.
"Are you being looked after? I can help you if you'd like, just be a sec!"

on 2014-04-06 03:42 am (UTC)He opened the new cage on the counter and eased Socrates into it. The bag of shavings, etc. he’d have to haul under his arm. “Well, looks like I’m good to go.” He picked up his purchases and wallet, still no closer to a full stomach.
Daniel fixed the brunette with a narrow-eyed but pleasant look, like he was still trying to puzzle her out. “It was nice meeting you. By the way, I’m Daniel.”

on 2014-04-06 03:54 am (UTC)"I'm Melody," she told him, "and I guess you know where I work," she added, "and it was nice meeting you too," she told him, picking up the packages and putting them in the messenger bag she had slung over her shoulder. She went to stick out her hand, figuring that he seemed like the type who wouldn't attack her outside the store, or on her way home, if they had shaken hands, though she had no idea what made her believe that. Perhaps the way he'd taken her fingers and pressed them to his throat, or the simple fact he'd actually told her what he was, she didn't know. but it just seemed like the thing to do. Until she realised his hands were full of his purchases, and Socrates' cage. So instead the hand thrust turned into a sort of wave and she giggled a little. "Can I give you a hand with something?" she offered instead, her hands conspicuously free.

on 2014-04-06 04:13 am (UTC)As if on cue, his stomach growled, loud and long.
Daniel shook his head. He was left to duck out of the pet shop, looking much like a teenage boy backing away on a dance floor after too much contact.
