Daniel opened his palm and studied the end of her braid splayed like a paintbrush, the individual hairs a cool mixture of brown and red that he bet looked killer in the sun. Not that he’d see it. There were things he missed.
“You can count on it.” Next time I’ll eat first. Probably shouldn’t say that part out loud, since it involved murder. “Holly,” he repeated, so there was no danger of forgetting it. Sometimes he behaved suspiciously like a victim of traumatic brain injury. Okay, so he had earned himself a few concussions over the years. Not a big deal.
“I’m gonna go, uh…” His finger circled the air and pointed at the street. “Run some errands,” he finished. “Some very boring errands. Who knows, I might buy some shoes. Keep yourself safe.”
