Valerie found herself leaning in when he did, like a couple of teenagers swapping secrets. Elbows lifted to rest against the table as she listened, even as her eyes followed his hand to his neck. Her gaze lingered there a second, watched his pulse jump beneath the skin, then snapped out of it when he clapped. “You were lucky all you got was a foam neck brace and not a wheelchair! I mean... The worst I ever got at that age was a few scrapes and bruises.” Now was an entirely different story, but she at least healed faster. Lips and teeth worried the straw in her glass before she sipped, and she began to nod at what he said.
“Well yeah because they know what to do with their fingers.” It wasn’t until she began chewing another piece of pie that her words really registered and she coughed. One hand covered her mouth but did nothing to conceal the sudden flush of colour that spread up her neck to reach her face. Valerie looked almost everywhere else bar at Brian as she added quickly, “To make the best music! I mean, that takes skill and who likes to listen to music that’s off key, right?”
