"So, anyway, I was thinking, you know, maybe you'd want to go out for dinner sometime. Like, with me. Like, on a date."

No. That stunk. Adults did not say 'like'.

Echo had decided to try and take Holly's advice about being brave, so she'd been trying to practice just approaching Emmeline as if she were anyone else, but it wasn't going very well. She'd get halfway to figuring out what to say, and then she'd be dissatisfied and have to start all over. It was fortunate that she lived alone, because she'd been talking to herself for most of the morning and a roommate might have asked questions.

Maybe you should shift in front of her first. That'd get her attention.

She was so annoyed with her verbal fumbling, even to herself, that she almost wondered if that wasn't the best plan. Being a hybrid was the least of her worries when it came to even trying to date, which was why adolescence had been such hell for her. There might have been no 'right' way to feel, but there was a 'socially acceptable' way to feel. Echo wasn't sure she passed muster when it came to the latter.

The phone mocked her. She still needed to call her parents, even if she didn't tell them about the incident in Las Vegas. Asking some woman she'd met once for a date almost seemed like the less daunting prospect. Her parents were kind, but they'd also warned her about the dangers of showing her Wolf side in public. She hated the thought of making them disappointed in her. Especially when they couldn't offer her a hug to take the sting out of it.

The mirror mocked her too, because she'd tried to practice her spiel in front of the reflective surface while getting ready for bed, and she finally got so disgusted that she made a horrible face at herself before quitting. There should be a manual for this kind of thing. If she'd been a different person, she'd have asked Papa how he'd wooed and won her mother. It wasn't as if she wanted to marry the woman, she just wanted one date, but it was so difficult.

She should ask Holly. Holly seemed wise for her age, or at least non-judgemental. Even if she did want to date a vampire. Echo had never had many friends because other kids thought she was awkward and weird. Maybe it had just been the free sharing of the other girl's pot, but she'd liked her. Maybe she should make an effort to get to know her better.

She clearly had to start somewhere if she wanted to date women.

He tapped the side of the thick envelope against the palm of his hand. The post office was largely deserted midday, which suited Devin fine. He stared at the metal flap in front of him. Outgoing mail. Just put the envelope in.

This was commitment. He couldn't very well dive in behind it if he changed his mind. And Devin changed his mind. A lot.

The blond turned around and walked out of the post office. Warm air braced him, and he took a deep breath. He leaned against the brick behind him, still holding the now slightly wrinkled letter. His draft outline.

Okay, so if it sucked, what was the worst that could happen? He'd get a no. No, not good enough. No, we need something a little different. Be diverse. Push the envelope.

Devin laughed at that. That was exactly his problem.
